From "10 Things To Know About Gregory Thompson"

On MLK Day, The Frederick Gunn School invited Gregory Thompson, co-founder of Voices Underground, to speak about preserving human dignity against injustice and inequality. The program, initially scheduled for the morning, was moved to 1 p.m. due to the snow. The entire school gathered to listen to Mr. Thompson’s speech, which connected MLK’s legacy, Frederick W. Gunn’s values, and the students’ experience today. This event left many students with sympathy for the many topics discussed regarding dignity in both historical and contemporary contexts.

One of the topics that Mr. Thompson delved into was contemporary challenges, where he asked the students to reflect on what disrupts dignity today. The students identified modern issues, such as the negative impacts of social media and toxic friendships, recognizing how these forces can damage the dignity of oneself and towards others as well as contribute to stress. As the conversation shifted to the emotional toll that comes with standing up for one’s beliefs, he referenced both MLK and Frederick Gunn’s struggles with depression as they stood firm in their unpopular opinions. He highlighted the immense pressure and personal cost that often accompanies the courage to challenge the majority, especially now, in a time of chaos, just like the time of MLK and Frederick Gunn. The discussion encouraged students to think critically about the internal and external challenges they face while living in a society where external forces often test personal dignity.

The session aimed to educate and inspire action, fostering a deeper connection between past and present struggles for equality. By relating Dr. King’s fight for dignity to current issues of inequality in general, students were encouraged to see the relevance of these themes in their own lives. In a world where dignity is often overlooked or violated, conversations like these are crucial for building awareness in this generation.

“I really liked the speaker because I think the interactive engagement he established with the students made the topics more personal for us than just being listeners,” said Rebecca, one of the students in the audience who appreciated Mr. Thompson’s presentation style. She also thought that the speaker was effective in terms of “raising awareness on protecting dignity.” Overall, the speaker helped students connect more personally with the topic, encouraging them to reflect on how they can protect dignity in their own lives.
