Freshmen Take on Adventure: Skiing and Bonding at Lake Placid

Every winter, the freshmen from The Frederick Gunn School went on an unforgettable three-day adventure to Lake Placid, combining the thrill of skiing with the bonding power of outdoor exploration. Led by the faculty of the school, this trip aimed at initiating freshmen into the wilderness tradition of adventure and camaraderie in school life. The students went right to the hub of the Adirondacks, spent time enjoying some classy skiing at Whiteface Mountain, and took in some awesomely beautiful scenery. For many, it was their first taste of the deep-rooted outdoors tradition that is in vogue at the school and a time mostly left in indelible memories with new friends.

Skiing allowed freshmen to improve their skills on the slopes, whether they were seasoned skiers or new to the sport. Students learned techniques from experienced instructors that helped them improve their turns, speed, and confidence on the mountain. Besides the technical skills, the outing created an environment of fun and mutual encouragement: students cheered on their peers and took to the slopes as a team through the challenges. For many, skiing down the mountain was the biggest thrill, next to the sense of accomplishment with which they learned new skills.

Besides skiing, the trip was packed with time for students to explore the town of Lake Placid, a place steeped in Olympic history and resplendent in natural beauty. Freshmen were given time to explore the quaint village, visit the Olympic Sports Complex, and take in views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. “It was super fun being able to ski and go ice skating at the Olympic circle while being with all your friends,” reflected four-year senior Owen Latsch. Other evening activities included team-building exercises and campfire gatherings, moments of quiet reflection, and bonding in the serene winter environment. This was a chance for freshmen to bond with their peers outside of the classroom environment and to make those friendships that would last throughout high school.

The Lake Placid trip was not a ski or sightseeing event but one that inculcated a sense of community and belonging in the incoming freshmen. The experience allowed them to step out of their comfort zones and grow as individuals while learning the values of teamwork, resilience, and adventure that define The Frederick Gunn School. Returning to campus, the students were re-energized by a new enthusiasm for the road ahead, aware that they are part of a school that respects academic excellence and believes in the shaping influence of the outdoors on young minds.
