This school year, the Frederick Gunn School launched a graphic design class, an exciting new opportunity for students to explore their new interests. The class, led by Mr. Turner, Visual Arts Faculty, is a one-term course that introduces students to the basics of graphic design using publication and digital imaging software.

The course, which began this fall, focuses on teaching students the basics of graphic design while helping them develop their skills using industry-standard software. Students solve design problems to create publications such as business cards, stationery, brochures, newsletters, and school posters with text and scanned graphics. They also explore the artistic possibilities of Adobe Photoshop, a software widely used for image editing, retouching, and creating image compositions. In addition, the course includes class critiques and discussions after each project, allowing students to reflect on their work and improve their design techniques. Since the course requires no previous experience in art to enroll in the class, it easily allows many students to explore a new interest through the new course. By the end of the term, students will be skillful in creating digital designs suited for both print and mediums.

The ability to create graphics is becoming more and more important not only for artists but for students across various fields. In today’s digital age, where visual content is essential on online platforms, being able to create exciting graphics is valuable. As technology becomes the core aspect of industries—from advertising and marketing to entertainment–-the need for people who can produce visually appealing content has grown. Whether for personal projects, building a college portfolio, or pursuing careers in media, marketing, or business, graphic design is a versatile skill that opens doors to many opportunities. At The Frederick Gunn School, the addition of this graphic design class is a part of the effort to expand its art program and offer learning experiences that combine creativity with practical skills for the future. The class offers students an opportunity to explore new interests while preparing them for a wide range of industries and future career paths.

“I think the graphic design class is a fantastic addition to the curriculum,” said Mr. Turner, who is already enjoying teaching the class. “It gives students the chance to not only express themselves creatively but also gain skills that are directly applicable to today’s digital world.” Overall, the graphic design class at The Frederick Gunn School helps students develop creativity and gain essential skills for a digital, visual world.
