For the winter trimester, The Frederick Gunn School announced a newly added co-curricular called Sports Information. The ten students selected to be involved in this program are led by Mr. Rees, Director of Entrepreneurship, to work on creating digital content that highlights the achievements and experiences of Gunn Sports. The co-curricular aims to boost the spirit of Gunn’s athletic teams through a new, innovative approach, setting itself apart from the existing co-curriculars.

The Sports Information co-curricular focuses on recognizing the school’s athletic programs and creating more engagement within the school. Content is being shared on various social media platforms, including Instagram, X, and a newly created TikTok account, which will be launched in late January. The program is off to a strong start, and the students are already creating exciting content to show the community. Mr. Marich, Director of Athletics, drove the idea for the new co-curricular, wanting the school to have a broader offering for students and to create additional coverage for Gunn Sports. “It is like creating our own mini Gunn ESPN,” said Mr. Rees, enthusiastic about leading this new, creative program. Through this course, he hopes the members “create interesting content that everybody enjoys and learn creative skills while doing it.” As many schools use digital platforms to engage with their communities, Sports Information intends to spotlight the achievements of Gunn’s athletes. By highlighting these achievements, the program brings attention to individual students and fosters more significant support for the school’s teams.

The Sports Information program shows the growing importance of sports media today, where athletes’ performances are just as celebrated online as on the field. The hands-on experience through this co-curricular provides opportunities for students to prepare for potential careers in media-related fields such as journalism, digital marketing, and content creation. Beyond the growth of the individual members of the co-curricular, the created content helps encourage school spirit and raises support for sports teams, which positively impacts the Highlanders’ experiences and better the community.

“I liked the idea of promoting school spirit and enthusiasm, as well as connecting the Gunn community and parents to sports teams,” said Martha, one of the passionate members of the co-curricular. Her goal through this co-curricular is to “inspire school spirit and excitement for games.” Overall, the Sports Information co-curricular represents an exciting and positive approach to Gunn athletics, blending a passion for sports with the power of digital content.
