A Weekend to Remember

Over the past weekend, November 1-3, the Frederick Gunn School hosted many activities, including welcoming adventure recovery, hosting senior events, and hosting the Halloween dance.

The Frederick Gunn community welcomed Adventure Recovery to their campus for the third year. This organization’s mission is “to guide people through the internal and external wilderness, cultivating a lifelong passion for learning and adventure.” They came to campus to host many activities for each class, including adventure courses, where students were brought out into nature to work as a team, making their way through various obstacle courses. There were also small group meetings where students communicated with each other and participated in activities created to help them understand how to regulate their feelings and emotions. The last activity was broomball with the underclassmen to prepare them for their upcoming trip to Lake Placid. All these events were created to be fun for students but also share a more profound meaning; they allowed students to learn what it means to have a mentor and how their influence can impact a community concerning mental health, addictions, and relationships with one another.

On Saturday, November 2nd, the senior class was greeted at Solley Dining Hall with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Prefects. Once students ate breakfast, they wrote cards for Mr. Trundy. Mr. Trundy is a very loved part of The Frederick Gunn community, as he has been a teacher and beloved coach for many years. Students were encouraged to begin working on their yearbook pages. These pages are a privilege for the senior class; many people have excitedly started working on them, choosing their best photos over their past four years at the Frederick Gunn school; the few hours set for the seniors are used to spend time together and connect.

The biggest event on campus this past weekend was the Halloween dance on Saturday, November 2nd. The eight prefects organized the dance and truly encapsulated the Halloween spirit. Students dress up in their finest costumes, getting ready for a night of dancing and singing with their peers. Starting at 8, students went to the lower gym where the event was being held, taking pictures and getting ready to bust a move. Students dressed from pirates to the Lorax to the Joker; students put their all into the costumes. As the night went on, laughs were shared, candy was eaten, and smiles were exchanged. After a tiring night of dancing and singing the students returned to their dorms, exchanging stories of the night they had with one another. This weekend truly brought the Gunn community together and showed that the community is a force for good.
