Why Up So Early?

For the ordinary student at the Frederick Gunn school, mornings start around 7:30 AM. This is not the case for a particular group of extraordinary students: the Boys Basketball Team. Every day, they are up at 5:45 am for a 6:00 am workout, as the team is taking every opportunity to blossom their talents as individual players and as a unit. With seven recruits ranging from freshman to post-grads, it will be tough going up against schools bringing back as many students as Gunn is bringing in. This is why the team’s early mornings are essential to growing.

The network sat down with Post-Graduate Adrian Quiros ‘25 to discuss the importance of these workouts. When asked about the importance of these workouts, Quiros said, “It’s important because I believe it builds chemistry. I don’t believe many other teams wake up in the morning to work out together. So just having that extra practice or workout time gets us better as a team, I believe, and improves us individually.” Then asked about how the team was coming together: The boys played in two summer showcases throughout July, where they went a combined 6-0; however, now the reality of a 4-month, 25-game schedule is setting in. Quiros said, “I feel that since the beginning since we played in the summer, our chemistry has been good from the start.”

“Now, I believe the team is coming together even more. Everyone’s finding their roles, and we’re molding together.” When asked who on the team has made the most significant improvement, Adrien named 6’10 junior Tommy Misukanis. Quieros said, “I would say, Tommy, yeah, he’s a junior and has just improved in every aspect of the game.” He went on to praise the big man’s work ethic. “He’s in the gym every day, including morning workouts, so I believe he has made the biggest improvement.”

With the most pressure and anticipation for a basketball team at Gunn over the last couple of years, this time on campus together and in the gym leading up to the season’s start will prove crucial and likely reflect how this year will go for the Highlanders.
