Why Do Creatives Flock to Washington, CT

Washington has always had a community of flourishing,  creative innovators, spanning from the naturalist William Harrison Gibson in the 1920s all the way to today’s painter Vincent Giarrano. While the art innovation and creative scene in Washington has never been lacking, it has experienced a boom in the last few years.

One of the contributing reasons for this is the fact that Washington offers not only beautiful scenery but also a strong artistic community with an intricate network of galleries and collectors.

Rebecca Tu, a student and painter at the Frederick Gunn school, notes her inspiration derives from the diversity of the seasons. “As an international student living in Washington for the past two years now, I believe a large pull is the changing seasons. Every season offers a new opportunity for creativity. The way the seasons shift here is unlike anything anywhere in the world, the poetry of fall, chilly winters that roll into a blossoming spring, unfurling into summers, the way the light shifts through the gray clouds after a storm… there is truly nothing like it. From a personal standpoint, I draw inspiration from my surroundings and I can think of no better place to do so than here in Washington.”

Locationally, Washington is unmatched and is the perfect getaway from the urban hustle and bustle of cinder block cities, as it is situated in the Berkshires and drivable from New York and Boston. A reprieve from urban living can also offer artists a chance to regroup and reflect, allowing the induction of a heightened creative state. Laura Naminski, Executive Director of The Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens, believes the town’s charm breathes new life into visitors and residents. “Washington is small, quiet, and private, which is different from the atmosphere in larger cities. It gives people a chance to recharge, which is the initial attraction for most people.” Additionally, Washington is easy to get artistic inspiration from, no matter the medium. The town has a rich history, with stories of the underground railroad and high schoolers’ shenanigans built into the foundation of our little society.

In the Washington community at large, there is a sense of leadership from all ages, and everyone here seems to have a place, a purpose, or a passion, leading to not only a sense of security but also a prime environment for creativity. This general culture allows for the gallery scene to thrive.  Washington is not only a vacation spot but a creative getaway. Our town is becoming a magnet for all those who are interested in innovation, creativity, and collaboration. It is taking on a rebirth of sorts and is becoming a hub for creatives.
