A Small Town Staple

1 min read

The Po, formerly known as the “Cafe on the Green,” has been a staple on the Frederick Gunn school campus and in Washington for as long as anyone can remember. During COVID-19, as most places shut down, so did the Po. This was different for the Po. As the Po was formally owned and operated by the Frederick Gunn School, it was sold to Maggie Colangelo, a local chef and baker. This would be a true test for Maggie as even though she has had success elsewhere, she was going up against the pandemic. Some of Maggie’s past successes were at local restaurants, such as Food for Thought and 9 Main.

Since its reopening on October 15th, 2020, The Po has seen a huge spike in demand for the restaurant. Maggie’s passion for food and having farm-fresh, local ingredients have taken the menu to another level. This has helped draw in a very loyal customer base and others who travel from all over Connecticut to try her food.

The restaurant’s warm and friendly atmosphere makes it an ideal spot to sit and eat. Maggie has also worked closely with the Washington community, hosting many events in the town and collaborating with many artists to showcase their work around the cafe. This hits close to home, especially for Ms Rimany, an FGS teacher and a small business owner. She has been able to sell her candles at the Po and further increase the popularity of her brand.

The network met with students on the campus to ask their thoughts on the Po. Senior Will Bartoli said, “I really like the Po; I think it is a great place to get away from campus for a little bit. I think it has a great menu with many delicious options.” The network also met with Junior Evan Bailey. “I love the Po. I try to go with friends at least once a week; I think the food is great, but also just the vibes there.” Lastly, the network met with Luca Fusco.  “I really enjoy the Po; I think it’s a great escape from campus even though it’s right next to us. Truly a home-cooked meal feeling every time I go there.” The Gunn community and Washington Community love the Po. It shows the power and resilience a small town has come together to make such a small cafe in a small town known across the state. Whether you’re a long-time patron or a first-time visitor, there’s something special waiting for you at this cozy cafe.
