The Spring Term has just started here at Gunn, and with it has come a multitude of new music choices. After the bleakness and desolation of a New England winter, songs injected with liveliness and catchy riffs are just what we all desperately need. Soon, Highlanders will be dotted around the turf, armed with speakers and spike balls… but what songs will be echoing through our beloved campus this year?
Blake Baumgartner ’26 recommends “Back on 74” by Jungle. This song reflects on the nostalgia of growing up and the longing to return to simpler, sunnier days. “Back on 74” was released as a single for Jungle’s fourth album Volcano in July 2023; however, it gained popularity this spring, becoming Jungle’s first Top 75 single in the UK. It is a lively mix of upbeat melodies that will be sure to provide a catchy backdrop to your spring day.
Mairin Hoffman ’25 suggests listening to My Girl by the Temptations. She describes it as a “feel-good song that reminds [her] of good times, so [she] align[s] it with spring.” It consists of classic Motown, bluesy guitar riffs beautifully written by American soul musician Robert White. This quintessential 60s soul record is the perfect song to play on a lazy Sunday afternoon at the turf.
“La ballade de Jim” by Alain Souchon, recommended by Matis Molina Ricard ’24, is an upbeat French ballad that tells the dramatic story of a troubled, heartbroken man driving around in his Chrysler. It was released in 1985 and is a hidden gem among Souchon’s 15 albums.
Ava Wyden ’26 would recommend “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass. This is a 1970’s pop treasure, marked by its infectious melody and engaging storytelling. It includes a catchy chorus, with breezy and lighthearted instrumentals. The story is centered around Brandy, a bartender in a seaside town and her love for a sailor, making it the perfect song for warm sunny days outside. Ava describes this song as the “best song ever.”
As spring blooms at Gunn, it is crucial to have a soundtrack to mirror the vibrancy of the season. Consider adding some of these Highlander-approved songs, expertly selected by various outstanding community members, to a spring playlist. Let’s look forward to embracing the warm weather and school spirit surrounding this short but joyful term, accompanied by music that truly captures the essence of spring at Gunn.
