On March 22nd, The Frederick Gunn community gathered in TPACC to listen to Frederick Gunn Alumni Adam Farber 00’ talk about his experience as a Top Gun fighter pilot for the United States Navy.

On the stage of TPACC, Adam talked about his experience at Gunn as a postgraduate student in 2000. Farber then joined the Naval Academy soon after his graduation. Adam expanded on his time before Gunn, and the struggles he endured, as he was no stranger to the face of loss. Adam explained why he no longer obtained a strong value for inanimate objects with a touching story that occurred in middle school when he randomly received a call from his father and was informed that his house had burnt down.

All of Adams’s items had disappeared in a matter of hours, and from then on, Adam grew up with a new sense and outlook on life that would be a leading cause of his success in the Navy. When Adam applied to be a pilot, he once again felt the stinging pain of struggle, as he was rejected for the original position he applied for, but was instead given an alternative role similar to what he applied for. Adam went through the rigorous process of the Navy’s training process, even without his ideal role, and when Adam finished, he came out with extensive knowledge in aerospace technology, flight, and combat.

Adam was deployed on numerous tours and had the opportunity to help fly F-14 Tomcats and even learned advanced flying in the Top Gun flight school, where the infamous Top Gun movie was based. Adam continued about his time in the Navy, where he spent much of his days flying aircraft and serving his country. However, as great as flying for the Navy was, Adam felt that he was missing out on his wife and kids’ lives back home and felt absent from them. Adam would ultimately make a life-shifting decision to leave the Navy to work in cyber security so he could additionally be closer to his family. When Adam at first wasn’t sure about his choice, he would swiftly be proven wrong as he found lots of success and meaning at his new job in cyber security. He became part of a team that constantly protected the United States presidential voting system from foreign interference that tried to alter Americans’ votes.

Adam talked passionately about his job in Cybersecurity, and what he did to continue serving his country while also being present for his family. Adam left the TPACC stage as the crowd roared with applause, leaving a mark on many students with new insights into bravery and the importance of family.
