Staying Sharp in Summer

All students know that summer is the only true solace from school, a blissful three months where very little needs to be considered other than what to do with your free time. For some, you might work part-time or volunteer somewhere in your town. Maybe the focus of your summer is traveling or making memories with friends. Regardless, school likely isn’t on the forefront of your mind, not in the way that it is the other nine months of the year. However, keeping sharp for when September inevitably rolls around is important.

How do you keep your mind active without worrying about school and everything to come? Here are some theories. One, do your summer work, whether or not it’s required, even when you still have two months left. Do a little every day. It’s important to be prepared for next year’s classes and not let your knowledge dwindle.

Another way to stay on top is to set a summer reading goal. Decide on a goal that is attainable and realistic for your schedule and reading speed, and stick to it. Maybe you read three books all summer, or maybe you read ten. Regardless, it will keep your mind moving. Think of it as the gym for your brain.

Brain games are a more fun, low-effort method. Find a game on your phone that requires some thinking, and play a little daily. They’re simple, enticing, and require very little from you. Or, if you’re feeling motivated, apply for a job or internship that makes you think and not just work. For those headed to college, placement tests should also keep you busy.

Obviously, these are all merely suggestions. Students should engage in whatever they feel comfortable with or what their schedule permits. The purpose of this article is to simply remind you to not forget about your studies this summer. Good luck!
