When Greg Norman created the LIV Golf Tour in 2021, it caused chaos throughout the golf world. Greg Norman, a two-time major winner on the PGA tour, aimed to change the game of golf for the better with the creation of LIV, but all it did was divide it. Norman wanted to create a world tour where everyone could play together and make a more competitive golf circuit, but this endeavor was cut short when the PGA banned all LIV players from competing in PGA-sanctioned tournaments in 2022. This chaos sparked a debate throughout the golf world on which league is better regarding the level of play, the players’ livelihood, and the sport’s honor. Golf purists argued that the PGA was better because of its history, while the newer generations argued for LIV due to its financial benefits.
The PGA Tour was founded in 1916 by Rodman Wanamaker and held its first event at the Oak Hill Country Club. The history of the PGA is what draws players to it and it is what is keeping the PGA alive. They have not made innovations to the league in a long time, and from a fan perspective, the PGA has gotten stale. They have only changed the salary for the league commissioner, Jay Monahan, which increased from $13.9 Million to $18.6 Million. The different format of LIV has drawn some of the best players in the world to the league. The team-based format brings a new dynamic to the golf world and is fresh air compared to the run-of-the-mill individual competition that the PGA provides.
With its innovative approach to broadcasting and interactive fan experiences, LIV brings the game closer to its audience. However, their audience sizes make an everyday PGA rerun look like the Super Bowl. With the relaxed dress code and music playing during events, everything points to LIV being a great change of pace to the otherwise dull golf scene. This hasn’t been the case, as many people are apprehensive to attend events or watch broadcasts of a Saudi-backed league. Even with its smaller audience and the questions it raises, the LIV golf league is still a significant change of pace and will change the game of golf forever.
