On January 29, the students and faculty of The Frederick Gunn School made their annual trip to Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall for the greatly anticipated Mountain Day. As the winter trimester drags out with less light during the day and unending cold weather, students wait eagerly for spring and for the sun to come out. Mountain Day is a day for students and teachers to take a break from in-class learning, and spend time with one another while participating in skiing, snowboarding, or tubing. It is a yearly tradition and a favorite amongst the community.
Angie Chase ‘26, went skiing for her first Mountain Day. “The day was awesome and tons of fun. It was an enjoyable experience in which I got to spend time with my friends off campus for a day and teach others how to ski. My favorite memory was when Brianna took an hour to get down the mountain. All of us had a good laugh and it was fun for us to watch her take advantage of trying something new.”
Similarly, Ryleigh Gagnon ‘24 loved her second Mountain Day. “My favorite activity on Mountain Day is skiing. My favorite memories are simply just being able to hang out with my friends and take a day away from academics, especially during the winter trimester. I enjoy taking pictures of the scenery on the mountain with my friends. These are moments I can look back on for years.”
Each year, Mountain Day is a day that students look forward to during the cold and long winter months. It is a time for students to step out of the classroom, take a day to relax, spend time with friends, and try something new. Learning does not always need to take place in the classroom. Spending time outdoors allows growth and strengthens our community when we support each other during these fun times.
