Over the weekend of February 10-12, the Gunn community came alive with vibrant colors, music, and a deep sense of cultural pride as they celebrated the Lunar New Year. This annual event has become a significant and eagerly anticipated tradition, fostering unity and understanding among students and faculty.

Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, holds immense cultural and historical significance, extending far beyond the borders of China. It is celebrated by millions of people around the world, marking the beginning of the lunar calendar and symbolizing new beginnings, family reunions, and hope for prosperity. The festival is a testament to the rich tapestry of Asian cultures, and its global recognition emphasizes its importance as a cross-cultural celebration.

The Asian Student Association (ASA) at The Frederick Gunn School has played a crucial role in upholding and sharing the traditions of the Lunar New Year. Their dedication to promoting cultural exchange and fostering a sense of community is evident in the meticulous planning and execution of the weekend festivities. ASA’s commitment extends beyond just organizing events; it’s about creating an inclusive community where students gather to appreciate, learn, and promote each other’s cultural backgrounds.

The celebrations commenced with a school meeting adorned with vibrant decorations, including captivating calligraphy in four different languages – Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Vietnamese – that set the tone for the festive weekend. Thursday night saw the many ASA members and other students come together for a delightful dumpling-making session, setting the stage for Friday’s much-anticipated Lunar New Year Dinner. The event featured diverse mouth-watering dishes, desserts, and festive decorations that transformed the dining hall into a visual feast.

Saturday morning brought a series of engaging activities and presentations curated by Mr. Poole. The lineup was carefully designed to provide all students a diverse and enriching experience. Students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a variety of activities, from storytelling, envelope making, lantern designing, and dumpling making. The insightful presentations by Mr. Poole helped students understand and appreciate the significance of the Lunar New Year. The inclusion of two different time slots allowed for greater participation and ensured that everyone could partake in the festivities.

Mairin Hoffman ’25 loved her Lunar New Year weekend experience. “This weekend I made red envelopes and painted lanterns. This experience was very unique as before the programming on Saturday, I have never really learned about the Lunar New Year celebrations and what they entail. It was truly fascinating to me to learn parts of other cultures, and also taste other cultures through the dinner the dining hall hosted on Friday night. This experience was truly eye-opening and brought us together as a school community as well.”

The Lunar New Year celebration at Gunn is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and unity within a diverse community. Through the efforts of ASA and the active participation of students and faculty, the event has grown beyond its traditional roots to become a symbol of inclusivity and understanding. As the Gunn community continues to embrace and celebrate its rich cultural mosaic, the Lunar New Year festivities serve as a shining example of the strength that comes from appreciating and respecting each other’s differences.
